WMTx: The World Mobile Chain Token

WMTx: a true utility token

WMTx powers the World Mobile Chain (WMC), a telecom-focused Layer 3 built on Base.

WMTx is used for payments, fees, staking, and rewards across the network. It also unlocks services like VPN and storage. Here’s how the team frames it:

“Core staking. EarthNode staking. EarthNode Operator NFT. Premier plan staking. AirNode staking. Hex staking. Unlocking VPN and storage. WMTx fuels every transaction on WMC. Buybacks. Incentivising participation. Multichain compatibility. Subscribers automatically buy WMTx. Governance.
I might have missed a few and for sure there will be more use cases as we continue to grow. WMTx is the utility king.” MrTelecoms - World Mobile CEO

In this article, we’ll show how WMTx is used and why it’s one of the most useful tokens in crypto today.

But first: what are utility tokens?

Utility tokens are digital assets that unlock specific functions inside an application or ecosystem. They can hold value, but their main purpose is what they enable.

Here’s how they differ from other token types:

  • Security tokens: represent ownership in real-world assets such as company shares, real estate, or debt. They are usually regulated and used to raise capital or transfer value.

  • Governance tokens: give holders voting power in a protocol, such as changing software, allocating funds, or setting network rules.

  • Utility tokens are about enabling functionality, access, and incentives within a specific ecosystem.

Utility tokens focus on functionality. For example, Filecoin lets users pay FIL to store data on the network, while storage providers earn FIL for supplying space. The token is required to use the service. It is not just an asset to trade; it is the mechanism that keeps the system running.

WMTx makes the World Mobile network work

WMTx is the fee and reward token for the World Mobile Chain.

When people subscribe, make calls, use data, verify identity, or connect to the VPN, some actions trigger on-chain interactions. Those interactions pay network fees in WMTx. Users are billed in local currency. The system handles the conversion and settles fees in WMTx behind the scenes, so no wallet work is needed.

Beyond fees, WMTx funds the network’s rewards. EarthNodes earn WMTx for validating transactions and running core services such as identity, routing, and storage. AirNodes and Hosts provide coverage and connectivity, and receive WMTx based on activity.

Seamless design is key to real-world adoption. Subscribers don’t need to manage wallets, yet every time they use the network, demand for WMTx is created.

In short, usage creates fees, and the network routes value back to the people who operate it. Revenue from plans also funds programmatic buybacks of WMTx that supply these rewards.

EarthNodes

EarthNodes are validator nodes on WMC. They validate transactions and run core modules such as identity, routing, VPN, and storage.

To operate one, you need an EarthNode NFT (ENNFT). The network caps EarthNodes at 1,000. Earlier reservations required a 100,000-token commitment to secure an ENNFT, reducing circulating supply by 100 million WMTx.

EarthNode operators earn WMTx based on the services they run and the traffic they process.

AirNodes

AirNodes deliver wireless coverage on the ground. Anyone can host or operate one to expand the network. The more people use your AirNode, the more you earn, paid monthly in stablecoins or fiat.

Subscribers pay in fiat, mobile money, or regional tokens. The network then buys WMTx from the market to fund operations and participant rewards. This ties WMTx demand to real usage.

This means WMTx demand grows as the network grows, creating a strong link between real-world adoption and token utility.

WMTx Staking

Staking lets WMTx holders support the network and, in some cases, earn rewards or perks. When you stake, you commit tokens for a period and may receive returns that depend on the program. Staking removes tokens from liquid circulation while they are locked.

There are three main types of staking in the World Mobile ecosystem:

EarthNode Staking

If you do not run a node, you can delegate your WMTx to an EarthNode and share in that node’s rewards. In delegated proof of stake, holders point their tokens to a validator (like Club Earthnodes) to participate without running hardware.

EarthNode staking is planned to replace Core Staking as the main way to earn. Rewards are expected to be funded by several sources, including the inflation wallet, transaction fees, value-added services such as VPN and storage, and third-party apps.

Tokens delegated to an EarthNode will be soft locked. You can move or sell at any time, but doing so during an active epoch forfeits rewards for that period.

EarthNode Staking lets WMTx holders earn rewards by delegating to a node. It’s DPoS, with rewards from inflation, fees, services, and apps built on WMC.

Core Staking

Core Staking is the current, protocol-level option. You stake directly to the network using either Cardano or Base, depending on where you hold WMTx.

You can stake using two main options:

  • Via the Cardano Vault (How to)
  • Via the EVM staking app on Base (How to)

Key details:

  • Rewards: variable, up to about 5 percent APY, not guaranteed.
  • Epochs: rewards are calculated on monthly cycles.
  • Wallets: only self-custodial wallets are supported.

Core Staking is a transitional program. As EarthNode staking rolls out, Core Staking is planned to be phased out in favor of delegation to active EarthNodes.

Premier Staking

Premier Staking is a perks program for customers and network builders. It offers tiered benefits while you stake WMTx and keep an active phone plan. It does not pay token rewards.

Access is simple: keep your phone plan active, stake WMTx in the app, and perks apply automatically. If you unstake or your plan becomes inactive, perks pause until you restake and reactivate.

Examples of perks include plan cashback, referral boosts, discounts on AirNodes, priority access to new products, enhanced support, and partner offers.

Premier Staking rewards mobile subscribers who lock WMTx perks, not tokens. The more you stake, the more benefits you unlock, like cashback, AirNode discounts, VIP access, and lifestyle perks.

The lower tiers are designed for everyday users. The higher tiers add benefits for power users and network builders.

AirNode staking (coming soon)

AirNode operators will be able to stake WMTx to their own AirNodes. AirNode Staking can increase their share of rewards or unlock additional earning incentives. This adds an additional reason for operators to hold WMTx, and strengthens the link between token usage and network growth.

Hex Auctions and Staking

Network Builders manage deployment in specific geographic zones, called Hexes.

To become a Network Builder, you will participate in Hex auctions by purchasing a Hex with WMTx. All proceeds from these purchases are used for WMTx buybacks, tying auctions directly to token demand.

Once a Hex is secured, Network Builders can stake WMTx to their zone. Staking may boost a Guardian’s share of rewards or unlock performance-based incentives (details TBA). This design links token utility to local network growth and motivates Builders to deliver strong, reliable coverage.

Utility in Action: VPN, Storage, and Compute

With a large and growing user base, World Mobile is in a strong position to deliver value-added services at scale. The network is also open to external builders. Anyone can launch apps on the World Mobile Chain, and all services are paid for in WMTx.

Third-party builders

Third-party developers and telcos are actively building on the World Mobile Chain. This includes roaming partners, DePIN networks integrating compute and identity, and apps that rely on WMTx for settlement, verification, or coordination. WMC is fast becoming a foundational infrastructure layer, not just a vertically integrated telecom solution. Explore the builders and partnerships.

Unity: audit work that drives fees

Unity turns phones into telecom test devices. Each verification call and anchored summary becomes an on-chain transaction. That activity uses WMTx for gas and contributes to recurring buy pressure as services settle. It’s a clean loop:
Tests in the field → proofs on-chain → WMTx used and redistributed to contributors.

VPN access

Every World Mobile subscriber gets a private VPN included with their mobile plan. The network uses EarthNodes to handle identity, authentication, and secure traffic routing. Each time a user connects, it triggers on-chain activity and WMTx settles those interactions behind the scenes.

Decentralized storage

EarthNodes power the distributed storage backend. When users store or retrieve data, related on-chain actions settle fees in WMTx, and nodes that supply capacity earn WMTx. Users are billed in local currency; the system handles conversion.

AI and Compute Services (Coming Soon)

The roadmap includes decentralized compute and AI inference. Access will be paid in WMTx, and rewards will go to participating EarthNode operators.

Beyond telecom, World Mobile is building a Web3 stack, with WMTx as its payment token.

WMTx used for governance

Governance is a key part of World Mobile’s long-term vision, and WMTx is expected to play an important role.

EarthNode operators participate in governance through their EarthNode NFTs (ENNFTs), which grant the right to run a validator. They vote on proposals that affect network operations and grants.

A broader framework for WMTx holders is being explored, with possible staking or delegation-based voting.

Automated WMTx Buybacks from World Mobile Subscribers

Revenue from phone plans and value-added services funds automated buybacks of WMTx from the open market.[1]

Purchased WMTx then flows to contributors such as EarthNode operators and staking programs under the network’s reward rules.

In short: Subscriber pays in fiat → Network buys WMTx → WMTx flows to contributors.

This circular design ties token demand to real usage. As the network grows, more WMTx is bought and more value reaches the people who run it.

Automated WMTx Buybacks from Unity Nodes

Unity adds a second stream of recurring demand. Phones run verification calls, results are written to World Mobile Chain, and that work generates service revenue.

Of Unity’s revenue, 12.5% is allocated to WMTx buybacks, linking real-world telecom assurance directly to token demand.[2]

Hex auctions

Hex zones are the map tiles the network uses to define local service areas.

A planned auction system will let Hex Guardians bid for zones using WMTx. If you win, a set amount of WMTx will likely be locked for the ownership period.

This ties token use to local network growth. More competitive zones may require higher bids or larger locks. The goal is to reward high-quality coverage and increase token utility.

WMTx for everyday spending

Starting in 2025, WMTx holders will be able to use their tokens directly through prepaid debit cards.

Zebec will launch Silver and Carbon cards (August 2025), followed by a dedicated World Mobile Debit Card (September 2025). Both are Mastercard-enabled and compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

This means staking rewards, EN payouts, and other ecosystem earnings can flow straight to a card and be spent anywhere, from local shops to global travel, without extra steps.

WMTx won’t just power the network. It will pay for groceries, transport, or a coffee, anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

WMTx Tokenomics

Fixed Supply, Deflationary Model

WMTx has a fixed total supply and a declining emissions schedule. Rewards are front loaded and taper over time while the supply cap stays constant.

WMTx Tokenomics:
2B max supply. No more minting.

Inflation drops to zero by year 20. Rewards go to stakers, operators, and builders.

Rising demand as the network scales

As World Mobile enters higher-priced markets such as the United States, revenue will increase, and programmatic purchases of WMTx will scale with that revenue.

WMTx has a fixed total supply of 2 billion and a gradual release schedule. Network growth does not change the cap, but it changes how much WMTx the program purchases and allocates to contributors.

How WMTx Compares to Bitcoin and other coins

WMTx is used across the World Mobile stack for fees, services, staking, and contributor rewards. Here is how it differs from well-known tokens:

Bitcoin (BTC): store of value

Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency and is widely used as a store of value and settlement asset. Its base layer does not offer native staking or general-purpose smart contracts. Typical uses are holding, transferring, and collateral.

WMTx is an application token for the World Mobile ecosystem. It pays on-chain fees on the World Mobile Chain, enables services, and funds staking and contributor rewards.

If Bitcoin is the king of value, WMTx is the king of utility.

Cardano (ADA): platform token vs application token

The ADA token shares some similarities with WMTx. It is used for transaction fees and staking to secure the Cardano network, and many hold it as a store of value.

WMTx plays similar roles within World Mobile: it pays on-chain fees on the World Mobile Chain and is used for staking and rewards; some holders also treat it as a store of value.

But WMTx also captures value in a way ADA does not. When World Mobile earns service revenue, it buys WMTx on the market and distributes it to contributors. This links WMTx directly to network usage, while ADA’s value depends on broader adoption of the Cardano platform and is not tied to a single service or cash flow.

ADA runs a general platform. WMTx powers one telecom ecosystem and routes value back to the people who run it.

Meme coins: limited utility

Meme tokens such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu are mainly used for transfers and community activity. Most do not provide access to services or infrastructure.

WMTx is the opposite. Its demand is driven by real-world activity. Usage creates on-chain fees, triggers buybacks, and distributes rewards. Even without hype, the network functions and consumes WMTx every day. That’s not true for meme tokens, which often collapse when attention fades.

Conclusion

WMTx is built for use, not hype. It pays on-chain fees, unlocks services, and funds rewards for the people who run and expand the network.

The platform is open. Builders can launch on World Mobile Chain and reach a fast-growing customer base. Holders can stake through programs that match how they want to participate, with incentives to hold and lock the token.

There are plenty of ways to get involved. Each one adds utility to WMTx, increases demand, and ultimately increases its value.

WMTx powers a functioning mobile network, with real users, real revenue, and global demand. Few DePIN tokens can say the same.

How to upgrade from WMT to WMTx

Use the official migration portal to upgrade WMT to WMTx. You will need the Eternl browser wallet on desktop and a small amount of ADA for fees. For step-by-step instructions, follow our migration guide.
