iPhone Tethering vs. Hotspot on World Mobile

I need some help figuring out how iPhone tethering vs a hotspot would work with World Mobile.

I travel a lot to remote areas where the internet is absolute garbage (think 2mbps max on a good day). Since I work remotely, that’s just not cutting it.

If I switch to the World Mobile Advanced eSIM, can I set up a separate hotspot device, or would I have to tether from my iPhone instead? And if that’s the case, is a separate hotspot device even worth it?

Also, is the non-priority speed fast enough for remote work, or am I setting myself up for frustration?

Hey @anon12073260, welcome.

Short answer: use Personal Hotspot on your iPhone. Standalone hotspot devices are not supported with World Mobile’s eSIM at the moment, so you cannot load the plan onto a separate hotspot.

How to set it up

  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot, turn on Allow Others to Join.
  • Connect your laptop by Wi-Fi, or use a USB cable for better stability and less battery drain.
  • Hotspot usage counts toward your plan’s high-speed data.

What to expect on speeds

  • While you are within the 30 GB high-speed allowance on Advanced, you get full 4G or 5G performance, good for video calls and cloud apps.
  • After 30 GB, data stays unlimited at reduced speeds. That is fine for email and light browsing, but video calls and large uploads will struggle.

Practical tips for remote work

:check-green: Keep the phone on power while tethering, and avoid heat.
:check-green: Turn off background updates on your laptop to conserve high-speed data.

If you can share the location, folks here can sanity-check coverage.
